Being in business can be trying at times but I have learned over time that opportunities can often be found in adversity. Looking back over many of the obstacles I faced when starting my craft business I now realize that the difficulties I faced helped to turn my attention to solutions that often resulted in a new income producing venue. You have probably heard the saying "find a need and fill it." What they neglected to mention was usually that "need" has another name, most people call it a "problem" and since the average person sees it as another problem they never realize the opportunity they missed.
A slight shift in attitude can create amazing results. Whether you see things as a problem or attempt to look at things as an opportunity can dramatically affect the success of your business, not to mention how much it can lower your stress level. Be creative -- when faced with a difficult situation try to see if you can turn it around to benefit you. When life hands you a lemon - make lemonade.
Are you having difficulty finding information or wholesale supplies? When I began selling crafts, I asked other crafters where they purchased their supplies, how they found out ahead of time where the craft fairs were - the response.......it was like pulling teeth.
Quickly I realized that if this information was so difficult to find, I probably wasn't the only crafter with this difficulty. I knew I would pay and pay big -- if someone would just give me some help. No one came to my aid. So I started asking questions and learned that "No" really doesn't kill you. I just kept asking and snooping and compiling data.
Then I had an idea if I could put all this information together and make it easy for people to get it - would they pay for it? I printed up some brochures which said "Do you want to know where the craft fairs are? Do you want to know where to purchase your supplies wholesale? Send $20.00......." I started passing out the brochures and the money started to roll in. Not one person asked to see a sample of the newsletter I was advertising. It was exactly that moment that I knew I had a winner. If people were this desperate to get information that they would send money before even seeing a sample my success was assured. Here is a great example of "find a need and fill it."
Look to your problems and see if you can't turn one around to be income producing for you, a solution for others. Difficulty getting supplies? Perhaps you can import supplies and sell to others. Perhaps you might become the USA rep for a company that doesn't sell to this country yet. Think about the joy in travelling around the world looking for solutions to problems AND writing it all off!!!
Have you considered teaching and sharing with others your expertise? Teaching can be a wonderful way to force you to learn more about your medium after all.....you are on your way to expert status!
Learn to focus on the positive. Find a need and fill it. Find common problems and be the one to solve it for others. I hope that you never look at a problem in the same light again. Remember Secret #8 OPPORTUNITIES ARE OFTEN DISGUISED AS PROBLEMS.
