If you have a chance to visit New York City you must use the opportunity to spend some time in the garment district. It's an area located between Broadway / 7th Ave. from south of Times Square and W. 42nd to W. 34th. In this area are many small shops just filled with fabric and notions. Some only carry bridal fabrics and laces, others specialize in woolens but most have a little bit of everything. Most of the goods that you find in these stores are the leftovers from the manufacturers in the city. You must plan on doing some digging but isn't that half the fun!
One of my favorite stores is B & J Fabrics on 263 W. 40th. They have several floors just crammed with wonderful pieces. Other shops specialize in trims and notions. I've been able to find things in these stores that you see in ready-to-wear clothing but can't find in your local fabric store. Watch for people handing out flyers for special sales. I've found some great things that way. Not all the stores are located on the main floors so therefore they have people hand out flyers to bring in customers.
Have fun and just think of it as a treasure
hunt!
