INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN
FOR SERGERS, ALL SEAM ALLOWANCES ARE 6mm (1/4")
Cut 9 strips each 7.5cm (3")
x 38cm (15"), 3 strips each colour
STEP 1. CONSTRUCTION OF TAILS
- Set up serger for a 3 thread rolled
hem stitch. You need 2 strips of each colour.
- Make a rolled hem along one long edge
(a), just trimming edge. On the second long edge (b),
fold under last section making a triangular point, trim
stitch to this point and Fray Check. (Hint: serge with
fabric right sides up so all points will go the same
direction).
STEP 2. JOINING TOPS OF TAILS
- Set up serger for a 3 thread wide
stitch.
- Serge down long edges of tails only
about 6cm (2-3/8"), right sides together,
alternating colours. Serge off leaving a trail of thread,
enough to tie a knot.
- Fray check knot. Set aside tail
section.
STEP 3. JOINING SOCK TOGETHER
- Keep serger set at a 3 thread wide
stitch.
- Serge remaining three strips together
along long edges, alternating colours and sewing with
right sides together.
STEP 4. JOINING SOCK TO TAILS
- Keep serger set at a 3 thread wide
stitch.
- Attach sewn ends of tails to long edge
of sock, right sides together.
STEP 5. FINISHING
- Keep serger set at a 3 thread wide
stitch.
- With right sides together, match
colours on sock section. Stitch sock section together and
continue stitching 6cm (2-3/8") into tail section.
STEP 6. COMPLETION
a) Divide the top of windsock into 3
equal parts. Punch a small hole on each marking.
b) Thread fishing line or invisible
thread through one hole made at edge of ring, as shown.
Thread two remaining ends of fish line or invisible thread
through D-ring. Tie each thread in a knot at remaining two
holes.
