Sewing for spring and summer is lots of fun. Shorts
are easy to make and sew up quickly. Find a basic pattern to
start out with and go from there.
Young children do not need pockets, so there is no need to add them unless you are trying a achieve a certain "look". As children grow older though, pockets are a must. Where else can they put all the treasures found in their travels?!
To make shorts unique, why not try some of these ideas:
make a side front pocket with a contrast welt
a side front pocket with a contrasting fabric showing from the inside pocket
put big patch pockets on the front
color block the shorts using a print on one side and a plain other
make the shorts in a plain color and add a strip out of a printed fabric down the side
add a contrasting waist band with a drawstring
add contrasting cuffs on the bottom of the shorts
change the length of the short from really short or long
for girls, make bloomers by lengthening the short pattern and adding elastic at the cuff
use a bright print that wears well and doesnt show off the dirt.
Shorts can be made out of just about anything and fabrics for spring and summer are exciting. The light weight printed and plain twills work well. Knits are super. Not only do the knits wash and wear well, they are also comfortable and breathable. Plain interlock is a wonderful weight for shorts and with the variety of colors available, coordinating with shirts is easy.
Some sewers are unsure whether to choose a baby pattern or a toddler pattern. The correct choice is determined by the mobility of the child. The major pattern companies design the infant patterns for children that wear diapers and crawl. Once you get into the T1 through T4 size range, these patterns have been design for walkers.
