This project is a super fast T-shirt dress and
jacket which can be made on a regular
machine or serger.
Materials
2-2/3 yard flannel
1 long sleeved T-shirt, or mock turtleneck
1 Pull over sweatshirt
clear plastic elastic
thread
DRESS
Skirt
1. Measure the length of the skirt -- stand in
front of a mirror and hold a tape measure at your waist and let
the other end drop to the floor -- note the desired length. Cut
two lengths of fabric (length x 45" wide fabric). Remove the
selvages and sew side seams. Hem the skirt with a rolled hem.
Mark the center front, back, and side seams of the skirt.
2. Try on the T-shirt and mark the
waistline. Lay shirt flat and cut off the bottom of the shirt.
With a pin or marking pencil, mark the center front and back of
the shirt and the side seams. Gather the top of the skirt so that
it fits the shirt. Match the center front, back , and side seams.
3. Cut a piece of elastic the measurement of your waist minus 6 inches. Fold the elastic in quarters and mark. While stretching the elastic, serge (or use zigzag on regular machine) the skirt to the T-shirt, matching the marks on the elastic to the center front, back, and side seams. Tip: sew with the T-shirt up.
Jacket
1.
Remove the cuffs and waistline ribbing from the sweat shirt. Lay
shirt flat and cut the shirt along the center front.
2. Cut enough 2" bias binding form the remaining skirt fabric to sew around the sleeve cuffs, center front edges and lower edge of the sweat shirt. Joint the strips end to end. Fold the strips lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press.
3. Serge or zigzag the binding to the raw edges of the jacket. Press the seams towards the sweat shirt.
Design ideas -- Make the skirt long and sweeping (tea-length).
Dress -- set in a border of patchwork. Jazz up the hem with prairie points.
Jacket -- Decorate your jacket with
appliqués, patchwork collar, or embroidery at waist front and
back -- zigzag over elastic to nip in jacket at waist. Add
buttons or decorative closures such as frogs.
