Krause Book Review
Sally
Cowan, Keeping You In Stitches
This time of year I receive a lot of wonderful books from Krause. I enjoy each evening looking through these books and picking up new ideas. They get the creative juices going. Many people love making scrap books using family photographs and other momentos. Julie Stephani has written a new book called More Than Memories II. It has 200 photos, 128 pages and includes 13 different themes. This goes beyond the basics of scrap booking. You will find step-by-step instructions on photo tinting, paper embossing, stenciling and photo transferring. ($16.95)
Another book is called Create a Quilt by Joyce Mori. This book has 100 black and white illustrations and 100 color photos. This book dispels the notion that special art and design skills are needed to create original quilt blocks and designs. The author's system of manipulating shapes such as triangles, squares and rectangles to create unique and attractive original designs is as easy as working a puzzle. ($19.95)
Still more. Patricia Morris and Janette Muir wrote a book called Worth Doing Twice: Creating Quilts from Old Tops. This has 120 black and white illustrations, and 50 color photos . This book details how to assess the condition of an old top; looking at the quality and integrity of the fabric, the quality of stitching, how the quilt lies and the consistency in piece sizes. The book goes on to present solutions that the authors have used for their own reconstruction's. It contains 20 examples of old quilt tops given a new life by the authors. Giving it new life, is certainly a better idea than leaving it in a closet to rot. This book is for beginners to experienced sewers. Fabric yardage's are included and full-sized templates accompany 18 of the projects. ($19.95)
Last Sunday I decided to go to our newest bookstore and spend a few hours. I checked the shelves out for new sewing books, crafts, home decorating and shelves in between. There is so much information our there--we need to take advantage of all this written material. Book stores are like fabric stores. You go in to buy 2 yards of fabric and you come out $200.00 later. Oh well, it's just money !!
