1. Cut around motifs, then trim to within a few threads of the cord. The net will not show on the fabric.
2. Determine layout on the gown. As a rule, appliqus are applied after the garment is completed. Pin in place with very fine silk pins.
3. Hand float the motifs in place by taking small stitches through the fashion fabric and underlining. Whipstitch all the way around the motifs. Do not pull too tight. The lace motifs should appear to float over the surface of the gown. Additional stitches in the central area will be needed if motif is large or heavily embellished. Hand floating is not as difficult nor as time consuming as might be expected and the superior results are worth the effort.
4. Use Clover thread wax to strengthen the thread and help it glide through the fabric. A small needle works best.
5. Individual lace motifs may be cut apart. Place a small amount of seam sealant on the cut cord. Extra stitches may be needed to anchor the cord.
6. The appearance of all-over lace or lace only, can be obtained by applying
appliqus to Mock English net. It has the softness of lace and the strength to support the
appliqus. The motifs are arranged to their best advantage with no portions needing to be cut away.
Applying Venice & Other Type Appliqus
Alencon yardage often has an edge or border that can be cut off to use as a trim. Coordinating and universal trims are also available.
1. Cut out edging, trimming to within a few threads.
2. Lay on edge of garment or seamline, clipping as needed to mold to shape.
3. Hand float or tack in place.
4. Universal edgings are frequently used to finish the neck edge and to cover the waistline seam. The scallop falls off the edge.
5. Placement of trims may require layering. The trim is placed on top of the appliqus, which may or may not be trimmed away.
