This little hat sews up so quick you will be wondering what the next step is only to realize you are finished! This hat consists of a brim and a fabric ties. The ties allow you to adjust the size of the hat easily, making it a great hat to wear under your bike helmet or on the golf course.
Materials:
0.30m (1/3 yard) printed cotton
Two 7"x10" heavy weight interfacing
Cutting Out:
Cutout two brims from printed cotton and
interfacing
Cut one 5-inch stripe that is approximately 42 inches long
Making the Brim:
Fuse interfacing to the WRONG sides of brim pieces. Sew the two brim pieces, right sides together, along the Long curved edge, using a 3/8" (1cm) seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance, clipping tiny V's along the entire length of the curve. Turn right side out, press and topstitch 1/4" from the edge all the way around (both the long and the shorter curved edges).
Attaching the Ties:
Take the long tie piece; fold it in half so you have a long tube that is approximately 42" long and 2-1/2" wide. Before stitching along the 42" long section, mark the following measurements. First, measure in from one edge and mark 21" (this is the center point of the fabric stripe). From this mark, make two marks, each 6" from either side of this first mark. This section (a total of 12") will remain unstitched until the brim is attached.
On the tie section, stitch from one edge to one of the marks you made (approximately 15" from the edge). Then stitch in from the other edge to a mark. Turn ties to right side and press.
Attaching the Brim to the Ties:
You will now have the tie section that is stitched at two ends with an open section in the middle. The brim is now attached into this center open section. The brim is attached onto one of the open sides first and them the section side is topstitched onto the brim. Pin the center of the raw edge of the brim to the center of the front ties, pinning only to one of the sections of the ties. Pin along the length of the raw edge of the brim. Sew the brim to the tie section. Topstitch second section down.
Your Finished!
