Quick & Easy Wall-Hanging
by Victoria
White, The Secret Workshop
These quick and easy wall
hangings are fun to create and make great gifts. They are also a great way to
use up all your scraps from other projects.
Sewing Supplies:
Fabric scraps
Fusible Web
Larger piece for backing
Teflon Pressing Sheet
Thread
Beads and specialty thread for decorations
Making Your Wall-Hanging:
Taking the piece of fabric that you have selected for the backing, iron fusible web to the wrong side of the fabric. Next (this is the fun part) take your scraps, cut off small snippets of lots of different colors and allow the small pieces to fall randomly over the backing. You can add lots of different fabric colors and fabric types. Continue to cut up small pieces until the backing is completely and heavily covered. Place the Teflon pressing sheet on top of the snippet-covered backing. Place your iron on top of the Teflon pressing sheet and hold the iron in place for approximately 10 seconds. Be sure to "press", lifting the iron up and moving to the next section. Continue until you have fused the entire area. Remove the iron and the Teflon pressing sheet.
Next, you need to do some all over free motion stitching. This helps keep in place all the little pieces of fabrics you have just fused. You can use either a coordinating or complementary thread. After stitching the snippets in place, you can now decide what type of small wall hanging you would like to make. We have pictures of two different types. One kind uses the fabric mosaic you have just made for the back and has a smaller heart fused onto the mosaic. The second kind has had the heart cut from the fabric mosaic. Let your creativity take over and create your own unique wall hanging. You might want to fuse on other shapes, add decorative threads and beads to finish.
Enjoy and share your newest creation.
(don't stop here - you can do lots of things with this technique including adding sections to quilts and garments!)
