Embellishment Explosion #35
Stained Glass
By Pauline Richards, Total Embellishments
Last year, while watching television I noticed news anchor Diane Sawyer, in the most striking color-blocked jacket. Since I wasn't home, I couldn't pop in a video tape to record the jacket, so I jotted down some notes about it. I told Linda Griepentrog about Diane's jacket and then thought about it for several months. One day, I decided to make a color-blocked jacket based on what I remembered from the one on TV; a few months ago a box arrived from Linda -- she had been visiting a thrift store near her home and found an identical jacket for $8.98. (An Ellen Tracy jacket like this generally sells for between $300 and $500.) Although the jacket she sent is too small for me, this beautiful, distinctive Ellen Tracy was the inspiration for some creative action!
The look could be easily duplicated with McCall's 2130, 2128 or 9238 without the collar. Make it in lightweight wool, using black and clear primary colors.
The seams where different colors join are covered with 1" wide, flexible, flat braid. Braid is also used around the neck, down the center front, at the cuffs and around the jacket lower edge.
Use the waistline seam as the dividing point for color blocking.
The original jacket meets at the center front, is closed with hooks and eyes and has no fabric underlap behind the hooks.
