Your figure is unique. Whether you are a size 8 or 18, you are the only one with the body curves and shapes as yours. Dressing with clothes that fit your personal figure will not only make you look better but will also make you feel better because you know you are doing the absolute best you can for your uniqueness, says Glenda Sparling, international lecturer on fitting and designing.
Sure-fit DesignsTM, gives you the opportunity to fit and sew for yourself clothes that blueprint your personalized shape. The system allows for a multitude of size choices from measurements of 28 inches to 62 inches in the bust and hip area and 20 inches to 52 inches in the waist.
Once your personal pattern has been adapted just for you, the fun of designing begins. When choosing your designs, keep in mind the basic principles of line, shape, texture, and color.
By using your best design lines you can literally loose 5lbs. without dieting, says Sparling. Vertical lines generally add visual height. A fabric with vertical stripping, a skirt with three asymmetrical pleats, a V-neck, are up and down lines giving the illusion of height. Horizontal lines, those going side to side, generally add width.
If you tend to be on the short and stocky side, keep your pants and blouses, or jackets and skirts all of the same fabric and color. Keeping a unified color also adds height, Colors can be light or dark, bright of dull. Depending on your personal, skin, hair and eye colors you might look best in bright, clear colors, or perhaps colors that are toned down into a softer grayer tone are for you. When you receive those special compliments on how radiant you look, you know you are in your right colors.
Use texture to your best advantage. Texture is the visual composition of the fabric. Generally larger prints look best on larger body frames, smaller prints on smaller body frames. A loose woven or bulky fabric will add visual weight to the figure. If you are small on top and bigger at the hips, consider balancing your figure by wearing a bulky fabric on the top - where you need it. Keep the smoother less-textured fabric on heavier hips.
Pleasing proportion is a combination of the elements of design, line, texture, color etc. Proportion is the relationship between the various parts. We talk about this in terms of being long-waisted, short-legged, long arms, large hips etc. When you know these facts about yourself, you can choose designs that put you in proportion.
Remember, accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative, and most of all, dress in well-fitting clothes.
