Putting Lycra binding on a fleece garment is a fast easy way to achieve a professional looking finish.
You will need:
.2m (1/4yd) of activewear fabric (swimwear or fabric with Lycra® or elastine)
Instructions:
Use a ruler and rotary cutter to cut 5cm(2”) strips of Lycra on the cross wise grain.
It is important that the Fleece edge is very tidy. Any inconsistencies in the cut edge of the fleece will show through in the finished edge. I use a rotary cutter and ruler to tidy up my fleece garment where I am going to apply edging.
With the right sides and raw edges together, stitch the Lycra® strip to the garment edge, using a 1cm (1/2”) seam allowance. Hint: Make sure the fleece is exactly at the 1cm marking on your machine as you sew. You can keep the lycra® back a bit from the edge so you can see the fleece.
Fold the edging around to the wrong side, using pins in the ditch to hold it in place.
From the garment's right side, stitch in the ditch, catching the Lycra® on the wrong side. Stitching in the ditch is painless if you use an edge-joining foot. The "edge" on the foot rides in the ditch of the fabric, giving you perfect stitching every time.
Use appliqué‚ scissors to trim the excess Lycra from the wrong side.
*To self bind fleece follow the same steps but cut a 7.5 cm (3”) piece of fleece on the crosswise grain for binding
