Trace the Puff-liqué design onto the matte side of a fusible stabilizer, like Sulkys Totally Stable. Cut out the traced design and fuse it to the fabric wrong side.
To the fabric right side, pin a piece of water soluble stabilizer. Straight stitch around the outer edges of the design using a short (2mm) stitch length. Trim the fabric and water soluble stabilizer, leaving a scant 1/4" outside the stitching line. Clip to the stitching line on the inside corners or curves and trim off the outside corners. Remove the fusible stabilizer pattern. Cut a 1" slit in the water soluble stabilizer only and turn the design right side out through the opening, using serger tweezers as needed. (Tweezer points make it easier to go in, pinch the design corner and pull it out.) Use a wooden point turner to help push out all the design contours. Press with a dry iron on the fabric side.
Carefully separate the stabilizer from the fabric and use tweezers
to insert small amounts of fiberfill through the opening. The fiberfill should be
distributed evenly over the design but not tightly packed.
When combining Puff-liqué with traditional appliqué, apply design elements from the base fabric out. Those closer to the surface, including the Puff-liqué may overlap flat portions of the design. Pin the Puff-liqué in place on the base fabric and stitch around the edges. Because the fabric raw edges are folded under, you can stitch with a straight stitch, a blind hem stitch or a narrow zigzag (1-1.5mm length and width).
When stitching Puff-liqué interior design lines and outer edges,
lighten your machine pressure, if possible. On the interior design lines, straight stitch
(3mm length) with machine embroidery thread. This stitching will give the design more
dimension and hold the fiberfill in place.
Dissolve the water soluble stabilizer by spraying the area with water or dipping the design in warm water.
