Rhinestone Zipper But...

I
never go to any formal affairs! Well,
you don’t need a formal occasion to add a little ‘zip’ to your holiday
wardrobe. Fall fashions are full of
glitz and glitter and a rhinestone zipper can make an outfit casually elegant.
Try one in a vest or, for more drama consider a simple sheath with a
rhinestone zipper in the back
Coupled
with black pants this velour top is perfect for at home holiday entertaining, an
evening at the theatre or that special dinner out.
This
top was made by modifying Vogue 7116-View A, but Butterick 6772 or McCalls 9582
& 2875 would also be suitable.
Some
tips for working with rhinestone zippers:
- Rhinestone zippers are delicate so you may wish to
select fabrics that can be hand washed such as velour or lightweight polar
fleece. Never put rhinestones in the dryer.
- To add stability insert a narrow strip of interfacing
in the zipper seam.
- Nice topstitching can be difficult to achieve when
using fabrics such as velour, so rather than the traditional application,
you may wish to hand pick the zipper.
- Machine baste the zipper to the garment a little
outside of the stitching line.
- Prick stitch in place - working from the right side of
the garment, insert the needle through all layers just behind the point
where your thread emerges, then bring it up approximately 1/4" away.
- In the above tip I inserted the zipper by machine using
an application similar to that of an invisible zipper.
- Lay the zipper right side up.
- Fold over the garment seam allowances and place each
side on the zipper (as it would look when finished). Place one pin at the
top of each side. This ensures that you won't twist the zipper.
- Now flip each side of the garment to the wrong side,
remove the top pin, pin and baste the zipper in place making sure the zipper
teeth are on the seam line.
- Stitch close to the zipper teeth.
