Keep all those necessary tools close at hand, in this handy organizer that hangs in front of the sewing machine. There is plenty of room to contain the sewing gadgets that are such an important part of sewing today. It can be individualized to fit any special tools as necessary by changing how the pockets are divided.
Materials Needed:
7/8 yd. fabric
1 yd. fusible interfacing-medium weight
matching thread
3/8 yd. - 1/4" knit elastic
5-1/2" x 10-1/2" rectangle heavy cardboard or 1/4" tempered hardboard
Bonfit ® No Hands! Elastic Wizard ™
Cutting Instructions:
Note: Using matching size strips/rectangles of fabric and interfacing, and following manufacturer's instructions for heat and steam, fuse interfacing to wrong sides of pieces. Use 1/2" seam allowances throughout the project. Trim all seams to 1/4".
Fabric:
2 strips 12" x 26" (caddy lining)
1 rectangle 8-1/2" x 12" (insert pocket)
4 rectangles 6-1/2" x 10" (front pocket, inner pocket)
Interfacing:
1 strip 12" x 26"
1 rectangle 8-1/2" x 12"
2 rectangles 6-1/2" x 10"
Making the Organizer:
Zig-zag or overlock along one long edge of rectangle for insert pocket. Turn under to wrong side 1-1/2". Press.
Place insert rectangle, fused side up, onto right side of lining strip, matching raw edges. Baste in place (see diagram1). With right sides together, baste remaining 12" x 26" strip to lining strip, marching raw edges. Stitch, leaving a 4" opening along one long edge. Turn. Press. Stitch opening closed.
Making the Pockets:
With right sides together, sew two-6-1/2"x 10" rectangles, leaving a 3" opening on one long edge. Trim seams, clip corners. Turn, pushing out corners. Press. Stitch opening closed. Continue in same manner with remaining 6-1/2' x 10" rectangles.
Baste pocket to center front of caddy, referring to measurements in Diagram 2. Topstitch pocket in place, 1/8" from edges. Divide into sections by topstitching through pocket (see diagram 2). Baste second pocket to back of caddy (see diagram 3 for placement). Topstitch in place, 1/8" from edges. Topstitch down center.
On inside, at lower edge, mark a line 3/4" from edge. Apply elastic, following line (see Elastic Wizard instructions), using very loose tension on elastic guide for soft gathers (see diagram 4). Note: Use marking tool of your choice (always follow manufacturer's instructions and test for removability before using any marking tool).
Forming the Shaped Bottom:
Turn up 8" with elastic to inside, forming a large pocket. Baste in place along edges, stretching elastic to fit. Topstitch 1/8" from edges (see diagram 5).
Turn pocket to wrong side. Fold across bottom and mark lines at ends (see diagram 6). Sew across lines. Do not trim seam. Turn to right side.
Remove any basting stitches that show. Place cardboard into insert pocket. Place under sewing machine to keep in place.
