Whether actually worn or simply used for decoration this lovely bonnet will stand out in the crowd. Add to it, the lovely nosegay corsage, and you've got a winning combination.
Materials Needed:
Note: For best results, do not mix silk and polyester fabrics for this
project. use all silk fabrics or all polyester fabrics. Color choices and hat
styles are limited only by imagination.
1/4 yd each, yellow, rose, peach, pink, and lavender polyester or silk organza
1/4 yd. each, polyester faille or china silk to match organza
1/2 yd. Moss green polyester or silk organza
1-1/2 yds. of 7/8" Moss green grosgrain ribbon - optional
2 yds. 1/8" knit elastic
3/8 yd. Crinoline or heavily starched cheesecloth
5" x 5" square moss green felt
Matching thread
Invisible thread
Purchased straw hat

Cutting instructions:
Faille: from each color
1 strip 3" x 20" (lg roses)
1 strip 2-3/4" x 20" (med roses)
1 strip 2" x 10" (buds)
Pastel Organza: from each color
1 strip 2" x 20" (lg roses)
1 strip 1-3/4" x 20" (med roses)
1 strip 2" x 10" (buds)
Green Organza
1 strip 1-1/2" x 25" (hat band)
1 strip 2"x 20" (bow)
4 strips 1-1/4" x 5" (stems)
11 rectangles 4" x 5" (leaves)
Crinoline:
1 strip 4" x 13"
10 squares 4" x 4" (roses)
1 square 5" x 5" (corsage)
Making The Roses:
Sewing matching colored 3" faille and 2" organza pastel strips together, turn and press centering organza strip (see diagram 1). continue in same manner with marching colored 2-3/4" faille and 1-3/4" organza strips and the 2" x 10" strips.
Fold 1-1/2" x 25" moss green strips in half lengthwise. Sew, turn and press. Continue in same manner for 2" x 20" green strip.
Apply elastic along one long edge on faille side of pastel strips using tight tension on elastic guide (see Elastic Wizard instructions).
With elastic side up, fold one raw end back to form 45 degree angle and roll 3" (see diagram 2). Using marching thread, tack to center of correct size crinoline square. Continue rolling and tacking, allowing roses and buds to bloom naturally. Turn raw end back to form 45 degree angle and secure. Trim crinoline close to rose.

Making The Leaves:
Fold and press 1" along one long edge of 4" X 5" green rectangles. Fold ends to center and sew hand gathering stitches, 1/8" from edge, leaving thread tails at each end. Pull up gathers and knot threads (see diagrams 3 A, B, C,& D.)

Finishing The Hat:
Press grosgrain ribbon in half lengthwise. Stitch around edge of hat brim, turning under last raw end for finished edge.
Make 5" bow with 3" tails and attach to back of hat. Arrange in a pleasing manner and stitch large roses, medium roses, buds, and leaves onto crinoline strip. Slash crinoline as necessary to allow flowers to hug crown. Trim crinoline close to flowers. Stitch in place on hat crown.
Making The Corsage:
Fold 1-1/4" x 5" green strips in half lengthwise. Stitch 1/8" seam and trim to make stems. Turn. Do not press.
Arrange and stitch medium roses, buds, stems, and leaves on 5" x5" crinoline square. Trim close to flowers. Draw outline of corsage shape on felt, and cut out, using pinking shears if desired. Make slits in felt for pin ends. Glue pin to felt and glue felt to back of corsage. Trim stems.
