If you are fair skinned -- If you take medication that reacts to UV Rays -- If you are a young child -- Skin cancer can be a real threat to your life!
The incidence of skin cancer in the United States has doubled in the last 20 years. Here are some of the ways you can protect yourself and your children.
Know that 100% cotton clothing only protects you 50% when dry and 30% when wet! Purchase sun protective clothing that come with a UPF (SPF) rating.
Wear a hat with a brim! Mesh will not protect you! Use one that has UPF rated breathable nylon or a double layers of cotton.
Wear long sleeves and long pants not cotton, clothing should be made of fabric that has a UPF rating on it.
Wear UV protective creams on the exposed parts of your skin. Reapply often.
Cover children while in strollers or in the pool. Make sure the fabric that they wear is UPF rated.
Pick the time you go into the sun, try to stay inside between the hours of 10am and 4pm.
Here is a handy UPF rating chart that you can keep in your wallet.
