Many manufactures are creating water proof or water repellent fabrics these days. An understanding of the differences in these fabrics may be able to help you decide as to what type would best suit your needs.
There are basically two styles of rainwear fabrics. One style is coated with a breathable or non-breathable backing. These are usually coated on the back or in the middle of three layers and are touted as water proof. Gortex ® and Ultrex ® are two of the most popular.
Another style you might find are fabrics that are water repellent because of their weave. These might also have a light water repellent coating on the face. Taslan ®, Supplex ® and Avalanche ® are a few that come to mind.
The best thing to do when looking for these types of fabric is to decide if you want the fabric to absolutely repel water, or just be water resistant. Then find some of the outdoor fabric retailers and order swatches. Also read the information provided with each type of fabric. Remember the lighter the coating the better it will breathe (unless it is a non-breathable coating).
