This technique is used by small factories that don't have specialized equipment for making flat-felled seams.

With wrong sides together, set the top layer of fabric back just slightly more than 1/4" from the edge of the bottom layer of fabric.
Fold the extended edge over the set-back edge and top stitch 1/4" from the fold.

Open the layers out, right side up, and press the seam flat so that the cut edge is buried between the fabric layers.
From the right side, edge stitch next to the fold, through all layers.
