Bedside Caddy

Wizard Attachments

Love to read at night, but just don't have room for the books, reading glasses, etc. on the bedside table? This practical, space saving project may be the answer to your problem. There is plenty of room for all the necessities of a late night read.

Materials Needed:

• 1-1/8 yds. cotton fabric

• 2-1/4 yds. Fusible interfacing - medium weight

• 3/8 yd. of 3/8" Knit elastic

• Matching thread

• 9"x14-1/4" Rectangle of heavy weight cardboard or 1/4" tempered hardboard of insert

• Bonfit� No Hands! Elastic Wizard

Cutting instructions:

Fabric

• 2 strips 16" x 33" (caddy)

• 2 rectangles 6" x 10" (outside pocket)

• 1 rectangle 12" x 16" (insert pocket)

Interfacing

• 2 strips 16" x 33" 

• 2 rectangles 6" x 10" 

• 1 rectangle 12" x 16" 

Making the caddy:

1). Matching strip/rectangle sizes, and following manufacturer's instructions for heat and steam, fuse interfacing to wrong side of all fabric pieces.

2). Zig-zag or overlock along one long edge of 12" x 16" rectangle for insert pocket. Turn under 1-1/2" to wrong side. Press.

3). With right sides together and marching raw edges, place insert pocket over one 16" x 33" strip ( see Diagram 1). Baste together along raw edges. With right sides together, pin the two 16" x 33" strips together and sew, leaving 4" opening in the center of one long edge. Clip corners. Turn. Stitch opening closed.

4). Pin the 6" x 10" strips right sides together. Stitch around, leaving 3" opening along one long edge. Clip corners. Turn. Press.  Sew opening closed. Topstitch pocket, referring to Diagram 2 for placement, to back of caddy.

5). Referring to Diagram 3, mark line 1" from finished edge.  Apply elastic (see Elastic Wizard instructions) with a very loose tension on guide for soft gathers, along marked line (see diagram 3), starting and ending 1/2" from both edges. Note: Use marking tool of your choice (follow manufacturer's instructions and test for removability before using any tool).

6). Turn up 10", with elastic to inside, forming large front pocket (see diagram 4). Baste in place along side edges, stretching elastic to fit.

7). Topstitch pocket 1/8" from side and bottom edges. Remove any basting stitches that show. Place board into insert pocket. Slide inset under mattress, allowing to hang over edge.
