Child's Play Quilt

Wizard Attachments

This is a scrappy quilt so mix and march as much as possible, except the center square which remains constant in each block. Contrast between the lights and darks are important, so keep this in mind when shopping for your fabrics. This quilt would be just as beautiful in traditional colors. Approximate finished size 49" x 67"

Materials Needed:

• 1/2 yd. each of four dark and four light fabrics

• 3/8 yd. for small inner border

• 1/2 yd. for binding

• 60" X 78" batting

• 1/3 yd. of a dark for the center square

• 1 yd. for large outer border

• 3 yds. for backing

Additional requirements:

• The Quilt Wizard 1/4" Extended Guide & the Stitch-in-the-Ditch and Sewing-on-the-Line attachment

• 3" half-square Triangles on a Roll � or 3" Triangles or 3" Thangles � (enough to make 48 half-square  triangles)

• Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat

• Neutral thread for piecing

• Matching thread for quilting

To Make 48 half-square Triangles:

1. From the 4 lights and 4 darks (do not use center square fabric), cut off a rectangle from one selvage end to measure 18" x 10" (the selvage runs along the 18" side, cut from one end only).  Cut this in half to make two (2) 9" x 10" rectangles.

2. Make six (6) combinations by layering a light and dark rectangle (right sides) together, mix and match as much as possible.

3. On each combination, lay out enough Triangles on a Roll �, or Thangles � to make eight (8) half-square triangles. Follow directions that come with the product chosen to sew and cut. Make a total of forty-eight (48), pressing seams to the dark fabric. These blocks should measure 3 1/2" at this point.

4. From center square fabric, cut two (2) 31/2" strips and crosscut these strips into twenty-four (24) 31/2" squares.

5. From remaining light and dark fabric cut two (2) 31/2" strips, crosscut into 31/2" squares. You will need a total of seventy-two (72) light and seventy-two (72) dark squares.

Making the Child's Play Quilt:

1. Lay out two (2) half-square triangles, one center square, and three light and three dark squares (see diagram A).

2. Sew together in rows using your Quilt Wizard 1/4" Extended Guide. Press seam allowances top and bottom rows to the left. and press middle row seams to the right. This will help make opposing seams march when sewing rows together to get a perfect match. Press seam allowances in one direction. Make twenty-four (24) 91/2" blocks.

3. These blocks can be set in the same way as traditional log cabin blocks. There are many books that will show different log cabin layouts, we chose one of our favorite layouts called "Barn Raising".

4. Lay out your blocks in a pleasing arrangement, using four (4) blocks across and six (6) blocks down. Sew rows together, pressing even rows to the left and odd rows to the right. Sew rows together making sure to match block intersections, press seam allowances in one direction.

5. Cut inner border fabric into five (5) 51/2" strips, trim off selvage, piece together into one long strip. Measure center of quilt from top to bottom, use this measurement to cut two strips from long strip, add borders to sides of quilt, press towards border. Add top and bottom inner border in same manner, measuring quilt from side to side through center of quilt, including side borders. Press seams toward border.

6. Cut outer border fabric into five (5) 51/2" strips.  Add outer border in same manner as inner border.

7. Piece backing by cutting yardage into two (2) 11/2" yard pieces. Cut off selvage and  sew long edges together. Press seams in one direction, press remaining fabric well.

8. Layer backing, batting, and quilt top, quilt as desired. A free motion quilt design was used all over quilt top, but you may use your Quilt Wizard Stitch-in-the-Ditch attachment to stitch in the ditch or diagonally through blocks for a pleasing design.

9. Cut binding into six (6) 21/2" strips and bind using our favorite method.
