Embellishment Explosion #21
 -- San Francisco Style

By Pauline Richards,Total Embellishments

embellishment_explosion21A.jpg (13399 bytes)A teal coat embellished in bright colors would definitely be very memorable and certainly not a coat you could call basic not practical!  So, if any of those attributes are important to you, consider using this motif on a jacket or on a scarf you wear with a basic coat.  If you decide to embellish a scarf, select a sturdy but drapeable fabric like wool crepe in a color similar to a coat you already own.  The scarf could be draped around the shoulders or be worn with a jacket or sweater.  The possibilities go on and on.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

--Coat or jacket of your choice, We used the Swing Workshop's Sandra Betzina Coat pattern
--9"x9" piece of UltrasuedeTM in red, green, yellow and blue or fabric pieces in colors of your choice.
--Thread to match each fabric
--Rotary cutter cutting mat and clear ruler
--Steam-A-Steam 2TM
--Medium-eight tear-away stabilizer

PREPARING THE EMBELLISHMENTS:

1.    Copy the San Francisco style embellishment pieces onto paper or cut the original pattern so that individual pieces can be cut more easily.

2.    Secure Steam-A-Steam 2 to the wrong side of each embellishment fabric. (This product is a slightly sticky, pressure-sensitive fusible web; no ironing is necessary until embellishments are completely positioned and ready to sew).

3.    Position all "B" pieces on blue fabric, and cut with rotary cutter.  Pin each pattern to the fabric.

4.    Position and cut all remaining pieces "G"=green, "R"=red,"Y"=yellow on appropriate fabric, cut and secure the pattern piece to the fabric. Note: It is impossible to position a clear ruler over pins and cut a straight crisp line. Therefore, pin pattern pieces to fabric after cutting.

5.    Remove the protective backing from Steam-A-Steam 2 backed fabric pieces, exposing the tacky side.

MAKE IT HAPPEN:

1.    Use the placement guides shown to position the cut pieces. Note: Dashes indicate that a piece is positioned under another piece.

2.    Position the four extra pieces on garment  front or scarf front using the front placement guide shown below.

3.    Back the areas to be embellished with one or two layers of tear-away stabilizer, as needed, depending on the thickness and stability of the fashion fabric.

4.    Sew around each piece to secure it into place. Note: if you're embellishing with Ultrasuede, straight stitch the pieces to secure.  If you are using a fabric that frays, finish with a satin stitch.
