Embellishment Explosion #34 
Great Shapes

Materials Needed:

• Jacket pattern with cut-on sleeve or Stretch and Sew � #1092, view A, without the collar and lower band or a  collarless  vest pattern of your choice.

• Fabric for jacket

• Ultra Suede � strips, commercial binding or bias-cut fabric strips for outer edge of jacket.

• Fabric scraps in a variety of plain colors

• Piping for collar

• Steam-A-Steam 2 � fusible web

• Three buttons

Cutting:

1. Shape the lower front and back seams as shown on the diagram 

2. Cut two collar pieces for the jacket or vest using the following dimensions: 3" wide at the shoulder, tapering to nothing 12" down the center front. Cut a 3" wide collar for the jacket back.  Interface the single layer collars.

3. Eliminate the lower band and lengthen the jacket if necessary. (Note: Great shapes is designed to meet at the center front. not overlap. Eliminate the front overlap by folding the pattern under at the center front line). 

4. Copy the shape patterns provided (Note: I like the definition that two colors give to a shape. The two lines around each shape represent two layers of fabric, the base is black and the top is  a color of your choice. Both layers should be backed with fusible web, then pressed into place. They can be topstitched. I prefer to topstitch the button flaps as shown on the diagram).

5. Cut the design shapes and tabs from fabric scraps for jacket fronts and back. Note: My jacket is made from sturdy melton cloth and the shape edges are unfinished, If you wish to have finished edges, cut lining pieces for each design, sew, trim and turn right side out, or satin stitch edges in place.

Construction:

1. Place piping around the collar edges, turn under and topstitch in place.

2. Sew the shoulder seams and press.

3. Back the shapes with Steam-A-Seam 2, press and fuse/stitch into place.

4. Sew the side seams.

5. Fit on the jacket and trim the neckline if desired. 

6. Bind the jacket and sleeve edges.

7. Stitch buttonholes in tabs, and sew buttons on jacket under them.
