Placemats 12" x 18"
Materials Needed:
1/8 yard of 9 light to medium homespun fabrics
1/8 yard of 9 medium dark-to-dark homespun fabrics
Fat quarters of two orange fabrics for pumpkin appliqus
2 yards green homespun fabric for appliqus background and placemats
5/8 yard rust fabric for binding or 1 yard if making bias binding
1-1/3 yards for table runner backing (you will only use half of yardage so this fabric could also be one of your light to medium homespun's)
22" x 45" batting for table runner and four (4) 15" x 22" rectangles for batting for placemats
Additional requirements:
The Quilt Wizard 1/4" Extended Guide and Stitch-in-the-Ditch & Sewing -on-the-Line Attachment
Neutral thread for piecing
Marching or invisible thread for quilting
Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
Scissors to cut out appliqus
Fusible web
Making the Tablerunner:
1) Cut four 3-7/8" squares from each of your eighteen homespun fabrics. Layer them in thirty pairs, right sides together; you will have some squares leftover.
Draw a line from corner to corner on the lightest fabric
Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the line
Cut apart on the line, press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should square up to 3-1/2" square. You should now have sixty half square triangle blocks.
2) Cut two 9-1/2" x 12-1/2" rectangles for the appliqus background. Lay blocks out in a pleasing manner, following diagram below, orienting the darker triangles in the same direction. Piece four sets of three blocks together for sides of appliqus block, add to the appliqu block top of bottom. Piece two sets of six blocks, add this to ends of appliqu blocks, keeping block orientation, Piece thirty-six blocks, set 6 x 6 to make center panel, pressing each row's seam allowances in opposite directions, so seams abut. Piece these three sections together to make your table runner. Diagram 2
3) Trace appliqus onto paper side of fusible web, cut out loosely around shapes. (See project sheet for appliqu outlines) Following the instructions that come with your fusible web, iron tall pumpkin shapes onto the wrong side of one of your orange fabrics, iron short pumpkins on the other orange fabric. Iron stems onto leftover pieces of one of your dark fabrics. Cut out shapes on traced lines, remove paper backing and fuse in place on appliqu background, see photo on page 10 for appliqu placement. Buttonhole stitch around each appliqu piece, either by hand or by machine. Layer your top, backing and batting (we prefer cotton batting) and quilt as desired (we quilted in the ditch) then outline stitch around the pumpkin appliqus. We also added some quilting on the pumpkins to add a rounded dimension. Cut binding strips 2-1/4" and bind your table runner using your favorite method.
For Placemats:
4) Cut eight 12-1/2" x 18-1/2" rectangles from your green homespun fabric. Trace four tall pumpkins, four short pumpkins, and eight stems, fuse to corner of placemat following instructions above for table runner. (See project sheet for appliqu outlines) Layer rectangles together with cotton batting in middle and quilt as desired. See picture for quilting ideas. Bind with rust fabric, using your favorite method.
