Heart to Heart Pillow
Victoria White, The Secret Workshop

This pillow design contains two hearts, a smaller one lying overtop a larger one. It is a wonderful design for any time of the year. We used the country colors available in the Debbie Mumm fabric line for our sample. The finished pillow measures 16�x 16�.

For one heart pillow you will need:

Fabric �A� 
(small heart and inside border)
four 3� x 3� squares (small heart)
two 1 �� strips 10 �� in length (inside border)
two 1 �� strips 12 �� in length (inside border)

Fabric �B�
(large heart and outside border)
twelve 3� x 3�squares (large heart)
four 1 �� x 1 �� squares (large heart)
two 2 �� strips 12 ��in length (outside border)
two 2 �� strips 16 �� in length (outside border)

Fabric �C� 
(contrast around large heart)
six 3� x 3� squares
four 1 �� x 1 �� squares

Batting and inside backing 16 �� x 16 ��
Pillow backing Fabric �B� two pieces 12 �� x 16 ��

Putting the Hearts Together

The Heart-to-Heart pillow contains four rows of four complete blocks in each row. Work one row at a time and them stitch completed rows together. The two colored squares are done by making quick triangles.

Row 1

Blocks �1� & �3�
take one 3� x 3� square of fabric �B� and one 1 �� x 1 �� square of fabric �C�. Place the smaller square in the upper left hand corner of the larger square right sides together. Stitch diagonally through the of fabric �C� from edge to edge. Trim away excess fabric and press towards the outside.

Blocks �2� & �4�
follow the same process; however this time place the 1 �� x 1 �� square on the upper right hand side of fabric �B� instead of the left.

Once all the individual blocks are complete, join the blocks together to make a row. Set aside.

Row 2

Blocks �1� & �4�
plain 3� x 3� block fabric �B�

Blocks �2� & �3�
take one 3� x 3� block from fabric �A�. Following instructions described above, stitch one 1 �� x 1 �� block from fabric �B�into the upper left corner of Fabric �A�. Repeat with a second 1 �� x 1 �� block from Fabric �B� into the upper right corner of Fabric �A�. Press seam to outside.

Once all the individual blocks are complete, join the blocks together to make a row. Set aside.

Row 3

Blocks �1� & �4�
Make a block with two colors by placing one 3� x 3� square of fabric �B� and one 3� x 3� square of fabric �C� right sides together. Stitch diagonally from corner to corner. Trim away excess fabric from the back and press seam towards the darker fabric.

Blocks �2� & �3�
Using the same method as described in the block above however use Fabric �A� and fabric �B�

Once all the individual blocks are complete, join the blocks together to make a row. In Block �1�, Fabric �B� should be in the upper right corner. In Block �4�, Fabric �B� should be in the upper left corner. In Block �2�, Fabric �A� should be in the upper right corner. In Block �3�, Fabric �A� should be in the upper left corner. Set aside.

Row 4

Blocks �1� & �4�
plain 3� x 3� inch block from fabric C

Blocks �2� & �3�
Make a block with two colors by placing one 3� x 3� square of fabric �B� and one 3� x 3� square of fabric �C� right sides together. Stitch diagonally from corner to corner. Trim away excess fabric from the back and press seam towards the darker fabric.

Once all the individual blocks are complete, join the blocks together to make a row. In Block �2�, Fabric �B� should be in the upper right corner. In Block �3�, Fabric �B� should be in the upper left corner. Set aside.

Putting the hearts together:

Join row 1 to row 2
Join row 2 to row 3
Join row 3 to row 4
Press seams, pressing all seams in the same direction and not opening the seams and pressing them flat.

Borders and Finishing:

Borders
Taking one of the 10 �� strips of Fabric �A�, matching raw edges and right sides, stitch the left side of complete heart block. Do the same with the second 10 �� length, on the right side. Press seam. Using the 12 �� lengths, repeat the process along the top and bottom edges. Now, for the second border, repeat the above steps using Fabric �B�. Press seams toward the darker fabric in between borders.

Quilting
Lay the inside backing fabric tight. Lay batting on top of backing. Then place the completed pillow block on top of the backing and batting. Pin or baste through all three layers or use stray adhesive to hold all three layers stable. Quilt as desired. On our sample we stitch around the two hearts and the inner and outer border.

Pillow Casing
Take one of the 16 �� x 10 �� pieces of fabric. Make a narrow hem along one of the 16 �� lengths. This will leave on finished edge and three unfinished sides. Repeat the same with the second 16 �� x 10 �� pieces of fabric.

Putting it Together

Place the complete pillow top down on a table, right side facing up. Lay one of the back pieces on top of the pillow top, right sides together and matching raw edges. Now, right sides together and matching raw edges, lay the second back piece on top of the pillow top, overlapping the first back piece and covering the top section that is not yet covered. Pin in place and stitch around the entire outside. Turn pillow to the right side, press.
To finish, slip a purchased pillow form inside.
