Nifty Nine-Patch Quilt

Directions for "Nifty Nine-Patch"
(Two 4-1/2" nine patches from two 6" squares)

1. Using 2 color-coordinated 6" squares, lay them together right sides in.
2. Sew a 1/4" seam on two parallel sides.
3. Cut this into three equal strips (2" wide) parallel with the seams.  Press toward the darker fabric ( Your decision on which is darker)
4. Press the seams open, then sew each center strip to one of the pieces with the seams -- one piece should be dark, light, dark; the other piece should be light, dark, light.
5. Take these two resulting pieces and pin them together right sides in and all seams parallel.
6. Sew a 1/4" seam on each side that is not parallel to the other seams.
7. Repeat steps 3 and 4.
8. You will have two 4-1/2" blocks.  One will be dark, light, dark, and the other light, dark, light.
9. To get a solid 9-patch twin sized quilt you would repeat this 161 more times.
