OVEN MITTS
Victoria
White, The Secret Workshop
These whip up really quick and are lots of fun to make out of our wild and crazy novelty prints. They make great gifts!
Materials:
0.3m (1/3 yard) printed cotton
0.3m (1/3 yard) thermal batting
0.3m (1/3 yard) lining fabric (I used flannel but you could use cotton or
muslin)
Notions
Matching or contrasting thread (as desired) pre-packaged bias binding
Here We Go!
Print out the following plans to use as templates:
Mark a 2-inch grid on your print cotton using a very sharp pencil or your choice of marking tool.
Layer the printed cotton and thermal batting with the shiny side of the thermal batting against the WRONG side of the printed cotton.
Sew along your marked lines (I used a contrasting thread and a 4mm stitch length) stitching through both layers.
Place the pattern on the fabric, trace and cut four (4), reversing pattern for two (2) tracings (this ensures that you get a right and a left mitt!)
Use SCISSORS to cut through the layered fabric - not your rotary cutter or your good fabric scissors. The thermal batting will take the edge off them and dull them quickly.
Cut four (4) pattern piece from the lining fabric (also reversing pattern for two (2) for the pieces).
Layer cut printed cotton pieces together and stitch around edges leaving the bottom open. Do the same with the lining pieces, right sides together.
Clip curves, ensuring to cut down into the V between the thumb and finger area of the mill. Turn the printed cotton mitts right side out (Do not turn the lining mitts) Place one lining mitt in each of the printed cotton mitt, pin together matching seams.
Apply bias binding to the open edges according to package directions. (I used a 3mm zigzag) starting at the upper (thumb) seam. Leave 3 inches (7.5cm) long tail at the end. (This will become your hanging loop - you can omit this if you like and just make a clean finish) Fold the 3-inch tail in half and tack to the edge of the mitt.
