If you are considering purchasing Pattern Making software, first answer these questions.

• Do you mix and match pattern pieces? 

•  Do you make changes to basic patterns to the look you want? 

• Do you sew without pattern instructions?

• Do you use your computer for more than e-mail? 

If you answers are yes, software may be for you. 

If you answer yes to the following questions, software may not be a wise choice. 

• Do you always read all of the instructions, match all of the marking and feel uncomfortable striking out on your own with a pattern? 

• Do you worry about making a mistake when you sew? 

• Do you plan to have someone else run the software for you? 

A knowledge of pattern drafting is needed for a CAD (Computer Aided Design) software, but not necessary for the �Pick and Click� type.  However, you do need to �use your noggin� to quote my dad.  Some common problems occur when you don�t look at the pattern but assume because it is a button down the front blouse that the back is placed on the fold.  With most software you will need to remove the seam allowance printed on the center back of the pattern. 

Do perfect measurements guarantee a perfect fit? 

Just because a pattern drafts to your measurements does not mean you are getting the �fit� you want.  Each person has their own idea of how they want a garment to fit, so sometimes minor adjustments are necessary. 

Just because a pattern drafts to your measurements does not mean everything will look wonderful on you.  Matching style, fabric and body type is just as important as fit.

Patterns drafted to your measurements will not necessarily make you look thinner, younger, taller, shorter, less busty, less hippy, ---but they are a good start to making clothes that make you look good.  

The new software drafts well and offers a large choice of styles.  Software packages start at $20.00 for a pattern with a few design choices to several thousand dollars for package suitable for a design studio.  The most popular full package home software programs are less than $200.00.
