Kids love to play house. Pretend meal times are always lots of fun. Why not make this quick and easy placemat set for the children in your life? These make wonderful gifts; simply include a small tea or plate set and watch their eyes light up. Four placemats and napkins will please any child.
This set is made by using the rolled hem feature on a serger. A rolled hem is created by tightening the lower looper on the serger so that the raw edges roll to the underside of the item. The result is an attractive and easy hem finish. Each serger is slightly different; please consult your serger manual for instructions and settings on your serger for making a rolled hem. When stitching a rolled hem, why not try a wooly nylon thread, This thread is a crimped nylon thread that fluffs up when stitched. The result is an edge that is filled in.
To Make The Placemats:
For each placemat you will need a double-sided, pre-quilted fabric measuring 13"x9". If this type of fabric is not available in your area, consider sandwiching a thin low loft batting between two cotton fabrics. To round the corners of the placemat , place a small saucer or small bowl in one corner at a time, tracing around the outside edge. Trim the corner away to make a curve. Repeat on remaining three edges. Using a wooly nylon thread and the serger set for rolled hem, finish the outside edge of the placemat, over-lapping the stitching at the beginning and end. Repeat the above steps with the remaining placemats.
To Make The Napkins:
For each napkin, cut a square of fabric measuring 9"x9". Set the serger for a rolled hem. Serge each of the four sides of the napkin with a rolled hem. Dab the corners with a seam sealant and trim off the remaining thread chain. Repeat with the remaining napkins..
