Finished size 26" x 50"
You will need:
8 coordinating fat quarters
0.25 meters (1/4" yard) accent border
Muslin - 15" x 38" crazy quilt foundation
Batting - 0.70m
Backing - 0.70m
2 spools of thread (required for top stitching)
1 spool of thread for bobbin
Tools:
Sewing machine
Cutting mat
Rotary cutter
Ruler
Scissors and pins
All seams "
- Prewash fabrics (fat quarters, muslin, and backing)
- Stack fat quarters and cut stack in half (the widest side so that you get the longest strips), put one stack aside
- Cut one half of the stack into 3 " strips
- Iron muslin and fold in half and crease center with the iron, then fold in half the opposite way and crease the center again with the iron (this will give you the center starting point for you crazy quilt foundation)
- Take one strip from the fabric stack (your center piece) and cut the rectangle into 5 varying sides. Pin face side up on the muslin foundation
- Next take a second piece of fabric from the stack and measure it against one side of the center piece (cut to length of side), place this piece face down (pin if you chose to) and sew. Fold second fabric to right side and iron - this technique continues until you have completed the whole top. (It does not matter if the fabrics go over the outside of the foundation, this can be trimmed once you have completed the top.)
- Once you have finished crazy quilting the top, you do the decorative topstitching on all the seams on the top - you can use many different colors of thread but I would suggest just choosing one color. Start topstitching with the center block and work outward until completed
- Take the ironed iron accent border and cut 3 two inch strips
- Pin accent border to the long side (right sides together) of the trimmed crazy quilt foundation, press seams open - continue with second long side and then finishing with the short sides
- Take the second stack of fat quarters and cut one 2 " strip from all fat quarters (this can be done in two stacks) - this is for the binding - set aside
- Take remaining accent border and cut 2 " strip to be used for binding
- From the left over stock of fat quarters you will cut 32 varying strips from stack (for example 8- 1 "; 8 - 2"; 8 - 2 ")
- Sew these strips randomly together lengthwise - ironing seams all in one direction once completed
- Once ironed, square off the strips on the cutting mat and trim top edge across strips - cut 3" (or 4") strips for outer scrappy border until you can go no farther (you can use remaining bits and pieces of scrappy border for enhancing the back of your runner)
- Sew all the strips together - Place long strip on first long side of runner (either unpick or cut off excess), pin so that you sew with seams not against - sew and press open - continue until you have all the sides complete until you have all the sides completed
- Prepare backing (if you chose to, place remaining strips into your backing). Tape backing to floor or table, next place batting on top and finishing with crazy quilt top. Ensure that everything lies flat as you work with all three layers
- Pin or baste the three layers - you can stitch in the ditch around the accent board to hold in place and also stitch through scrappy border if you chose
- Trim outer edges of runner so that they are straight - you are now ready to sew on the binding
- Sew all binding strips together, trim excess to " and iron seams flat
- Take binding and iron in half matching edges wrong sides together
- Chose your method of attaching binding - either miter or straight corners
- Pin binding to the table runner, right sides together, sew and then iron seams flat. Fold binding over, pin and hand stitch the backing
Now you are finished your wonderful crazy quilted table runner!
