As excerpted from The Finishing Touch, By Kathleen Brown
Buttons can be such fun and so functional . . . I use them in clusters, like little bouquets with lace backgrounds, and as single surprises where you might not expect to see one hiding. Probably the most creative thing about buttons is finding different way to attach them -- running threads through their holes to make various designs, using ribbons to tie them on to fabric, stitching beads through their holes. Dangling buttons from threads, stacking buttons on buttons as they are stitched in place. . .And buttons can be made out of most any material: leather, shells, wood pieces, stones, almost anything. Our daughter, along with many others, makes great buttons out of Sculpey and Fimo.
CAUTIONS WHEN EMBELLISHING
If possible, think ahead when you embellish. For example, placement of some embellishments is important - think about what part of your body will end up being embellished when the garment is worn -- where do you want that tassel to hang? And, what will that embellishment come up against when the garment is worn? Ive gotten caught on a car seat or two, forgetting that the back of a jacket has a pokey charm right in the middle of my back.
You will find it takes considerably longer to get from point A to point b when you wear embellish garments. Total strangers will stop you, admiring your work and strike up conversations that could indeed take the better part of your day. Also, people will not look you in the eye when they talk with you -- their eyes will be dancing around your marvelous wearable work of art.
Your friends and relatives will all want you to create works of art for them too. Ill let you be the judge in how you respond. If you are asked how much you will charge to create an embellished piece of art, I encourage you to ask the interested party if they want a nice garment, tell them where to buy this book, or give it to them as a gift of friendship (knowing it will save at least this one). If they want a piece of art, then begin negotiations . . . Bartering is fun too!
